There are fears that possible job losses at a West Coast mine will seriously damage the local economy and force residents to move elsewhere for work.
A total 230 Spring Creek Mine employees have been asked to attend a meeting with Solid Energy on Wednesday where it's thought job cuts will be announced.
Contractors spokesperson Peter Haddock says times have been tough on the coast following the Pike River Mine explosion.
“You know people are just sort of battling on, but I don’t think a lot would want a second blow that’s for sure.”
The move comes as the Government looks to increase profits at state owned Solid Energy as coal prices drop.
