Music fans are set to party at the last Big Day Out on Friday, as New Zealand musicians pay tribute to the festival which began in 1994.

Promoters announced that the New Zealand arm of the trans-Tasman event would be stopped following this year's festival at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland because it was no longer financially viable.

Sales of tickets, which cost $160 each, were down this year.

Among those performing on Friday are grunge act Soundgarden, indie rockers Kasabian and Kiwi songstress Kimbra.

Hundreds of "#BDOmemories" tweets could be found on Twitter including comments from well-known New Zealand artists.

"I was in the stand and I was telling people to shut up and listen. Love bjork," musician Anika Moa wrote.

"Walking through the gauntlet of bands portacom rooms behind the mainstage seeing our idols and thinking wtf are we doing here," rock band Midnight Youth tweeted.

This year's festival has been plagued by controversy, with hip hop star Kayne West removed from the line-up and rap act Odd Future axed after complaints about the group's homophobic lyrics.

The festival's Australian shows will continue.
