Fire crews are reportedly battling a blaze within metres from homes in Northland.

A helicopter and several ground crews are at the scene north of Te Kao, about 45km from Cape Reinga, Fairfax reports.

The fire started about 5:30pm on Tuesday and about 20 hectares of forest are believed to be on fire.

No-one has been evacuated.

The fire was not under control by 8pm on Tuesday and fire crews are expected to work throughout the night.
