Smoke from the fire is seen from the Colombo St railway bridge - reports suggest the blaze is near Pak 'n Save on Manchester Street

Firefighters are battling a blaze in a commercial building in central Christchurch.

Fire southern communications shift manager Karl Patterson said the single-storey building near Pak ‘n’ Save in Welles Street, which runs between Colombo Street and Manchester Street, was well ablaze when crews arrived after 11am today.

Five fire trucks and a ladder appliance were at the scene and thick black smoke could be seen billowing over the city.

The cause of the fire was not yet clear and it was not known if the building was occupied, Mr Patterson said.
