The emergency services were called at 4:34 am to Sumner Road following reports of a fire, police said.
Fire officials said more than 125 firefighters were tackling the blaze.
The fire has spread to several three or four storey residential buildings in the area.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Police have evacuated approximately 150 residents from their homes. They will be moved to emergency accommodation provided by the local authority, police said.
