Police in Taranaki are appealing to the public for information after 10 high-powered firearms were stolen from a rural property.

Police say the guns were taken from a secure arms safe on the Ohura Road property, northeast of Stratford on New Year's Day.

The thieves levered open the safe and took off with the firearms and a green Daihatsu Terios, which was later abandoned further down the road.

Police are interested in sightings of a dark blue or black stationwagon seen parked in the area at the time of the burglary, or any sightings of the green Daihatsu.

Kerry, when the rabbits, possums, and everything else have eaten the vegetables and fruit your diet will be ...? A lot of introduced species that run rampant in this country would be competing very successfully for your food. You might as well stop eating now. These can be well controlled by firearms used by people vetted by the Police. If you eat vegetables and fruit that have been protected from pests by any form then you are a hypocrite. I have canine teeth, that tells me I have been bred to eat meat, some of which I obtain myself.

The police and military will protect us from criminals, really? WRONG! 1. Police are reactionary, they cannot protect you during an incident - as many murder victims show. 2. The police have also shot a number of civilians accidentally. 3. The military is not used in this capacity domestically. 4. You are assuming that firearms owners own their firearms for self defence. You try applying for a license with that as your reason and see how quick your application is rejected. 5. you are assuming that the woman that is strangled to death in the alley is somehow morally superior to the one that shot the attacker (fictional situation). 6. How will removing firearms from the public make everybody safer, will this magically stop criminals from having them and obtaining them? Your logic is so twisted that a contortionist would be proud.

As my job involves funding some of the fenced island sanctuaries for native species you promote, I speak with some knowledge, which clearly you don't. They are incredibly expensive to build, maintain and still require buffer zones with poisons and traps outside and inside the fences to prevent incursions (which still occur). They are hardly the cure all to protect native animals across the expanse of New Zealand.
Many introduced animal and plant species are destructive and some deserve no place in NZ at all.
Please actually do some research before you spout off, it makes you look like an idiot.
Get off your backside and go protect/restore a patch of native bush from weeds and introduced animals, rather than sit at your keyboard spouting your misinformed pampered lifestyle views on those who actually do make a difference to looking after the environment.
PS, Aunty does own guns, a fit and proper person, as judged by the NZ Police.

The animals are already inside the forests. Building a big fence around the outside would be a waste of millions of $$$. Banning the import of ammunition will also do nothing, this can also be made easily. As others had pointed out, guns are not responsible for crime, criminals are. I would estimate that less then 1% of reported crimes have anything to do with firearms. There should be an age limit for posting on these message boards.

It doesnt matter anyway as that land is used to farm meat, mabey if the rabbits destroy it then you meat eaters will forced to become vegan..and alot better off for it.

As for the native forest, if is an issue you can build fences like the one around Mt Maungatautiri and then all the animals can have the right to live.

@Brad
Actually us vegans are quite intelligent and healthy, I have both an arts and history degree, what do you have ? As for solvents nothing un-natural goes into my body. My mind is healthy thanks to my diet and regular meditation.

Mabey some of you angry gun owners out there should try a bit of meditation.

@Kwrry "As a member of PETA we are taught that all animals are equal and if rabbits outnumber other native life then thats how nature intended it to be, who are we to hunt them down and cull them for fun..and meat...ewwww?" Are you joking? Have a read of this page and tell me this is what NZ needs: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/rabbits In many areas where rabbits were first introduced into NZ the populations go so high farmers had to leave their land as they were unable to turn a living off it due to the lack of grass. If there were no hunters and DOC to control populations of possum, rabbit, goats, stoats, rats and deer our native forests, bird life and high-country tussocks would be gone in under 50 years. PETA are foolish if they believe leaving populations of introduced animals alone will solve our problem. If you ever get cancer do believe it should be left alone as that is how nature intended it?

Maybe we should just ban left-tards. I think restricting your diet to vege's may result in brain damage. It really makes you wonder how these tards come into existence. How they get this far without being hit by a bus or something is anybodies guess. Lay off the solvents

Well if we ban the importation of ammunition then any gun even manufactured ones would be useless.

@aunty
Im glad people like you dont own guns. You are babaric.

I think the vast majority of NZ'er do not have a clue about the costs of pest control and how much of this cost is handed down to firearms holders. DOC has spent $1.2 billion in the last 20 years for 1080 possum control operations alone. Now if we were to ban firearms from the public not only would DOC have to manage possum populations but also rabbit (at least 5 million of them per year with the population escalating with time), goats, deer, tahr, chamois, elk (yes we have those here in NZ) as well as others. As it is both DOC and the hunters benefit, DOC get free pest control and hunters get quality free range meat as well as being able to enjoy some of the best outdoors in the world.
