The Fire Service was called to the blaze around 2:30am

Police are talking to two men in relation to a fire that broke out on top of Mt Eden, in Auckland, overnight.

Ten fire trucks were called to the crater at 2:30am this morning to battle the blaze, which locals say was started by fireworks.

Due to the dry conditions, wind and a lack of water it took the fire service several hours to get the fire under control.

The fire spread over 200 square metres and could be smelt as far away as Devonport.

Haha Penny! It's not a criminal offence to let off fireworks other then at Guy Fawkes! You can let them off whenever you want but you are right in saying that it's especially stupid to let them off when everything is dry.

We enjoy our fireworks quite happy and safely however we did save them for New Year this yeas as it has basically rained or been very windy since Guy Fawkes night. (Sorry Penny it hasn't been that dry). Guy Fawkes actually failed in his attempt to blow parliament which kinda means that we celebrate his failure, why do we continue to celebrate failure in this country

@Kath - you don't understand, people cannot behave responsibly. The reason for the nanny state is because of all the grown ups behaving like children. Selfishness and the inability to think about consequences is rampant in NZ.

People who live near me are still letting off fireworks randomly - usually after midnight when the rest of us are wanting to sleep. They need to be made aware that it is actually a criminal offence (I think?) to let off fireworks at times other than Guy Fawkes ... and that it's especially stupid when everything is so dry.

@Dan - while people insist on behaving like selfish children then I say ban fireworks fullstop.
