Cabinet holds its first meeting of 2012 today with ministers looking at the government's priorities and the legislative changes they will be making during the year.

The economy, the welfare system and the partial sale of four state-owned power companies - all big issues during last year's election campaign - will be on the agenda.

Prime Minister John Key will hold a press conference after the meeting, and on Thursday he's due to make a speech in Auckland which will present a big picture look at economic prospects in what's likely to be another lean year.

Mr Key leads a delegation of senior minister to Canberra on Friday for talks with their Australian counterparts and National's caucus will hold an all-day meeting next Wednesday ahead of the start of the new parliamentary year on February 7.

I am wondering @ Johnmillan, why I agree so much with him. Running with tail between his legs, the little piggy that went wee wee all the way home.

Shearer is a joke already. He is a pathetic fence sitter. What has he done about the waterfront dispute ? Nothing. Absolutely diddly squat. Labour are supposed to represent the workers - That's why they are called LABOUR ! Shearer does not want to upset anyone - has weak is that. Labours rank and file members are already moaning about his weakness. Key has some balls and normal thinking Kiwis voted for him. Replacing Goff with Shearer was the worst mistake Labour have done - replacing one pathetic loser with another. Key again will romp home at the next election. Labour are a joke at present. As long as Labour promote half the population living out of the wallets of the hard workers on New Zealand they will always loose.

Wondering,Shearer should do well against Key,as key is so much of a spoiled child he is most likely to run from the Chamber crying out for help by his twenty or so body guards.

I personally can't wait for the Parliamentary year to start. To see how the Looney Nats stuff NZs economy up with their looney ideas. Selling state assets to NZ investors, when the International Trade Agreements prohibit the Government from favoring NZ investors over international investors. NZs Government will lose up to 9.7 Billion Dollars in dividends over the next 15 years. Power company investors will be mainly international investors within 10 years. this is exactly what happened since Contact energy was sold. its dividends – an amount worth over $1 billion – has gone overseas since National sold it in 1999.
