The first of Prime Minister John Key's Great Rides for cyclists opens today.

The St James Cycle Trail in North Canterbury is part of watered-down plans for a national cycleway.

Conservation minister Kate Wilkinson says so far about $675,000 has been spent in the local economy on the trail, and she's hoping there'll be more.

She says more than 20 people worked building the trail.
