I also personally know Tom Picken and I agree completely @Ellis. It was extremely inappropriate to drag him right out of work and interrogate him on the spot. Issues like this need to be sorted out on a personal level, not shoved into the spotlights of the media hounds. I wish Tom the best in working through this.
I personally know Tom Picken and believe your segment was extremely one sided and was a disgusting way of painting a picture of this young man. I completely agree with user FH's comments. Reporting like this to name and shame for such an innocent issue is poor and unacceptable. I hope in future you can concentrate on real issues instead of harassing hard working New Zealander's trying to solve the issues in front of them.
I feel sorry for the kid that bought the car. But this seems like something the two parties could have easily solved themselves. Unless the original owner contests and tries to keep it seems like the issue will be sorted out soon. @Laurie, clearly committing fraud? Sounds like he didn't know any better. Yes he probably should have clearly read the contract but he probably didn't have any idea what was going on till they decided to confront him at his work. Ignorance isn't malice. I think they should have let the two parties discuss this together, instead of giving one side the chance to dress up and present a well thought out complaint, and showing up at the others in the middle of the day to try and make him appear foolish and sinister.

Well I dont have a lot of sympathy Im afraid as It is widely publitised and advertised by the varios organisations that provide the information of whether a vehicle is freehold or not!! This is a case of "Buyer Beware"But the buyer was not.Nevertheless I believe the Gentleman selling the car--That was not his to sell should be answerable to the Police over the matter as He clearly committed fraud! Now if David had purchased from a RMVT (a registered trader under the act of Parliment that covers this sort or thing) The vehicle legally cant be Repossessed.Thats if even there is an outstanding loan on it. You may have to pay a little more to purchase from a dealer But You have piece of mind That You have clear title and also the Consumers Guarantee Act if something goes wrong with the vehicle.A RMVT cannot contract His/Her way out of Their responabiltys even if sold through the likes of Trade me or a car fair
