Police took five people into custody tonight after a car chase on Auckland's North Shore.

The chase started about 7.40pm when police became suspicious of the occupants of a Mazda 323.

The occupants of the vehicle, five youths mostly in their late teens, threw objects from the car at pursuing officers as they were chased around Birkenhead.

Eventually the Mazda was spiked on Glenfield Road 10 minutes later, but continued on its rims until police managed to block the car in and stop it. One patrol car sustained minor damage.

A police spokesman said the five teenagers were "helping police with their inquiries".
