Five people including children are injured after their car rolled off the road near Mount Messenger this morning.

Taranaki Rescue Helicopter chief crewman Jayden Strickland says at least three young children were injured when a people mover car carrying eight people hit black ice and rolled off the road.

Emergency services were sent to Mokau Rd, about 60km North of New Plymouth just before 7am this morning.

St John Ambulance central communications manager says the five people had moderate injuries. Two people were airlifted and three were taken by ambulance to New Plymouth Base Hospital for treatment.
