Amidst the chaos of Christmas shoppers a lone woman breaks into pitch perfect song and is quickly joined by 70 more.

It's a singing flashmob, some even dressed as mall cleaners to add to the surprise.

And when the spontaneous singalong ended the stunned shoppers asked for more.

The surprise was to give jaded shoppers and retailers a last minute boost before Christmas.

Mall management says they wanted to do something different from the usual Christmas carols.

“It was definitely a surprise, we kept it really quiet and I think people really enjoyed it. There were a couple of people crying,” says centre manager Tracy Thompson.

The singing was courtesy of chorus group the Sweet Adelines.

“It was awesome, shaking it gives you a real buzz it's really cool,” says group member Vicki Hoskin.

Flash mobbing isn't new, it's a form of street theatre organised by email or text and designed to surprise and delight.

But for these Christmas carollers it's back to the practice room as they prepare to compete for international titles in America next year.
