Flashmob haka takes over Trafalgar Square

3News NZ

Tourists in London's Trafalgar Square got more than they bargained for today as a flashmob haka took over the iconic landmark.

The flashmob haka phenomenon started as a warm up to the Rugby World Cup but it had never been done in London, until now.

3 News Europe correspondent Melissa Davies was there.

Just for the edification of some of the comments 4 of the guys in the front row come from the waka Tainui. Two come from the iwi directly descended from Te Rauparaha. Haka can be dropped and performed for any reason that the performer wishes. It's main purpose being to bring together a collective group to be as one (kotahitanga) and to achieve a common purpose as one unit. Not all haka are war haka and this one is a haka taparahi in which it acknowledges a past deed involving someone having to do all he could to survive and carry on to lead his people. We perform haka to entertain, to acknowledge , and to show collective strength. If people from the iwi that this haka comes from wish to perform it then be it on their heads. If your maori and you got something to say about it, fair enough. If your not then your comments have no bearing whatsoever on what maori do with their own culture. That's our business. On this occasion the culture was there to share with whoever wanted to mana up.

It was amazing to be there to see this. Being a Kiwi so far from home it is so good to be around other Kiwi's who are proud of their culture. Good work team this was awesome!!
