Flooding and heavy rain in the Nelson area has closed roads and made driving dangerous this evening.
Police are advising motorists to stay at home as flooding affects roads in Wakefield, Kohatu, Motueka, Brightwater, Appleby and Richmond.
Nelson Bays police sergeant Jo Managh says contractors were putting up warning signs in affected areas.
She advised motorists not to drive in the area unless it was absolutely essential.
