Flood damage in North West England continued to cut people off from their homes as damaged bridges remained closed after some of the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Britain triggered floods last week.

One bridge in the coastal town of Workington was reportedly in danger of collapse.

The Calva bridge was sealed off after engineers discovered a crack in the main arch, forcing residents to make lengthy detours.

Police and army experts said they are urgently checking the safety of 1,800 bridges across northern England.

More than one thousand homes flooded and an unknown numbers of businesses have been wrecked in the region.

"The water got so high that there's nothing left to save," a card shop owner, Fiona Robinson, told Sky News in Workington.

Police said residents and business owners in the hardest-hit town, Cockermouth, would be allowed to return to their properties on Monday.

Britain's Met Office said a record 314.4 mm of rain had fallen near Cockermouth in 24 hours.

Military helicopters were scrambled on Friday to winch people from rooftops, while debris floated down the town's flooded main street.

Authorities have advised people in Cumbria against returning to their homes, as forecasters predicted further downpours over the coming days which could hamper recovery efforts.

Authorities say 18 schools remain closed.

A police officer was swept to his death when a major bridge collapsed on Friday.
