A University of Canterbury music gig had to be called off after the venue's floor collapsed.

Last night's Perfect Storm concert was called off after the floor at the new $2.5 million temporary events centre collapsed during a performance by New Zealand hip-hop star Savage.

Nine-hundred people were packed into the venue, when the floor gave way just after midnight.

Student Association president Erin Jackson says the venue was evacuated.

The University is launching an investigation to find out what caused the collapse.

The centre opened in April after the university's original student bar was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

Students took to Facebook after the incident with some calling it "epic" and others demanding a refund because the event was cut short.

"Man do you remember that time in Uni we partied so hard we broke a building... EPIC!" wrote Hugh Devereux-Mack.

Alistair Barbour wrote: "Wow.. interesting night I think everyone else will agree it was a fantastic night until the accident".

However, other students, such as Kelly Shrimpton, said it was just lucky no one was seriously hurt.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Earthquake proof means the ceiling doesn't fall on you during a quake. I guess they weren't too concerned about building the floor to the same standard.
