Fly Direct was to provide ski package flights to Christchurch, Wanaka and Wellington

Fly Direct Ltd, a company which heavily marketed direct flights to Wanaka from Christchurch and Wellington for the ski season, has collapsed before it got off the ground.

Companies Office records show the company has been placed in liquidation. Damien Grant of Waterstone Insolvency is handling the liquidation. A message on the company's website also advises of the liquidation.

Jeffrey James Kay of Ponsonby is listed as the company's sole director and shareholder.

Businessday.co.nz reported that around 500 people who signed up for packages offered by the company are understood to have been left out of pocket.

It quoted Mr Grant as saying it was too early to say how passenger pre-payments would be handled in terms of the liquidation.

I have been looking further into Jeffrey James and it appears that he has been involved in a large number of organisations that have been struck off - i am quite surprised that he was even able to start a new company. It would be interesting to see if anyone can find out more about this.

We have also lost our holiday and probably $2000, a 3 month wait to find out if you will get any of it back - which sounds unlikely - seems very unfair. I think it is theft and the punishment doesn't fit the crime. We should get what we paid for. These guys new that it might all fall through yet no one informed us of the risk. I think there needs to be better systems in place to protect people like us from being cheated. Someone should be liable.

We had been sooo excited when fly direct started. My firends and I all managed to get together enough money to pay for a trip for the four of us. We spent over $2000 between us and are absolutly gutted about this. Hopefully we get most of it back. It took alot of saving for us to be able to affored this trip. We called the Oakridge and they are holding our booking open and said that when we get refunded we can rebook through them at the same price. We just need to sort new flights, rental cars and lift passes.

Well... the old adage rings true again... "If it seems too good to be true it is" ! We bought tickets for a good deal by a ligitimate company and we have been totally shocked to hear the company has been put into liquidation. We only paid for our ticket two weeks ago! Was our money a last ditch effort ot prop up their coffers? My husband and son have been planning to get to the South Island for a couple of years now to go snowboarding and have a boys bonding trip away. Now we are out of pocket and are totally angered. We dont know if we will ever recover our hard earned money. How do we break it to our son that his dream trip has been completley been dashed. "Sorry son this is the real world!" All we can do is fill out the creditors form so promptly emailed to us and cross our fingers we get our money back.
