A
young couple's frozen 12-week-old foetus awaiting burial and being
stored in a freezer was among property stolen from a ransacked New
Plymouth home, a court has been told.
The foetus, that of the
couple's miscarried baby, has not yet been found following the November
thefts, where burglars cleaned out a new house the couple was gradually
moving into.
The anguishing story was revealed when the last of
the thieves, Jamie Bill Kingi Awa and Kevin Baldwin, in their 20s, were
sentenced to community work when they appeared in New Plymouth District
Court this week, the Taranaki Daily News reported.
The pair took the only remaining belongings left on the porch after others had earlier cleaned out the rest of the house.
A
large number of people were charged with the burglary. Food, clothing,
toys, photos, albums, certificates, trophies, kitchen appliances,
weightlifting gear, tools, a washing machine, microwave and TV were
stolen.
The 12-week foetus of the couple's miscarried baby, which
was stored in the freezer before being given a burial ceremony, had been
stolen along with meat. The foetus has not been found.
Judge Allan Roberts said the theft had caused intense hurt to the victims.
