Thousands of Foo Fighters fans are on their way to Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium right now for what should be one of the biggest rock concerts of the Kiwi summer.
Fifty thousand fans are expected to pack Western Springs for the Foo Fighters, and the rain is holding off right now but is forecast.
Fans came early despite the grey skies hovering above, but nothing is going to stop the Foo fans.
It is the first time the Foo Fighters have played at the open-air Western Springs Stadium, a venue that they chose themselves.
“Western Springs is renowned as being one of the greatest rock and roll venues - Led Zeppelin played here, U2, Rolling Stones, you name it,” says Brent Eccles of Frontier Touring.
It is the American rockers' ninth time playing in New Zealand, this time as part of their Wasting Light album tour. And lead man Dave Grohl's good friend Jack Black will be opening with his band Tenacious D.
Some suburban streets around Western Springs have been closed to traffic in an effort to placate residents, some of whom feel they had more than their share of loud concerts over the years.
There are strict conditions of entry for the concert; notices warn fans “no light sabers or garden gnomes” will be permitted. It's a request made especially by the Foo Fighters, who are known for their sense of humour.
Fans can expect more of that fun when the Foos play tonight.
