Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Phil Goff says the Government's restructuring of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will see the closure of New Zealand's embassy in Sweden.

The New Zealand Herald reported yesterday that up to 200 jobs are expected to go according to a ministry spokesman, but Mr Goff says the actual figure will be around 260.

The cuts are expected to be announced in March, and be enacted shortly afterwards.

New Zealand First leader and also a former Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters says the cuts will hamper New Zealand's competitiveness worldwide.

"If you compare New Zealand's overseas presence with Singapore and Norway, two similar-sized countries, you will see that we have less than 40 percent of their international effort.

"That is why those countries are flourishing and we keep sliding further down the OECD."

He calls it a "short-sighted" move that will cost more in the long run.

Bet you voted to keep MMP?, well here is the results that MMP bring to the table, I know you don't like it...but 49.4% is still a MAJORITY %age than all other left parties put together, would you prefer FPP?, no one wants to go back to that so why are you moaning?
Because a high percentage of Left voters (Read Labour voters) didn't vote doesn't mean the left have to throw their toys out the pram. I suggest to you if the situation was reversed and National were in Labours position and the right posted that Labour have no mandate you would all be laughing and giggling at the posts, just as I am with yours and Clarke's 'The Standard's directive' replies.
And please don't suggest National were the only ones 'manipulating' MMP, Jim Anderton had a free run for years in Wigram, Labour put up patsies or none at all and this election the Greens just voting for the party vote and suggesting the electoral vote go to Labour etc etc...take off your blinkers and see the whole farce that is MMP, I voted to keep it too...but I want changes made as do most voters.

@eddie..If you want to spout statistic how about this one..national 48% act 0.9% and united future 0.5% = 49.4%. all the other parties were against asset sales so how can Key say he has a mandate? Fact 1- national rule because of a manipulation of the MMP system. Fact 2- national rule with the slimiest of margins. fact 3- One byelection could change it all.

People seem to of lost sight of the topic. Nats have made cuts to MFAT. FAT being the key word here. I have had dealing with MFAT CATS and they are hopeless. All they care about is where is the next cocktail party being held. If we want to increase our exports etc then we need to totaly restructure MFAT. A good start would be looking at the Aussies and how they do it. Man do they work it for their markets. Ours are to busy shining their shoes for the next event. So I completely agree we need MFAT but lets get the FAT CAT bit sorted.

Haahaahaa, I see The Standard has given out the directive of 'just say National had a low voter count and they'll not ask us about Labours worst result in 85yrs' ...haahaahaa, well done Clarke, your masters have given you a directive and you'll repeat, repeat, repeat.
Now, what about the poll results Clarke, or how about the lowest vote in 85yrs for Labour...27%!!, but please feel free to come back with your 'directive' again and again haahaahaa

Actually Eddie, National got 33 percent of the vote, Labour got around 13.5 percent of the vote. Remember John Key caused the biggest stay at home vote in history... no one is impressed with his asset sales plans. 48 percent of the lowest voter turnout in 120 years isnt a win for John Key in the slightest. And no Cherie.. given your previou comments on beneficiaries and even Maori... the correst spelling is "nasty Bigot". Nice to see you are as misinformed as ever Eddie... everyone got this election wrong and John Key got the biggest no vote of them all... without a moral mandate (over 50 percent of the elligible vote) all he has is a government by technicality... Funny thing is Key tried to excuse the low turnout and say some of his voters stayed home.. but none of them did.,.. all the nasty little bigots like you rushed out incase Key lost. And even at full support... National only got 33 percent of the elligible vote. Neither the polls nor I could predict that John Key and Phil Goff would turn the voters off so much. Infact they both made a thrid of the country fall asleep. If John Key were inspiring he would have gotten Phil Goffs dozing supporters... but he didnt.. no one did.. they stayed home. And now John Key officially runs the government with the least amount of public support in electoral history.

Hi Clarke
Nice to see you have mellowed, care to tell us all how your 'predictions' for the election went?, I seem to remember you saying all polls were bogus and only the 'Horizon' poll was accurate (Labour on Horizon was, ummm, 37% and National on 38% or so, you may correct me with the actual figures) and Labour actually got 27% and National 48% which was not too bad in reality as most polls were showing this gap...soooo Clarke, silence on this eh...what caused it? Right wing conspiracy? MSM bias? well lets face it anything really apart from Labour itself and it's policies eh?....you better attack me and National now Clarke as trying to explain how you got it so wrong is so much more difficult than just attacking others....lets see so far i'm a Maori hater and a woman basher and Bene hater, or is that Bene basher and woman hater...so many you have called me hard to keep track! lol

Funny two of the biggest Bigots on the site tell me to bugger off to Australia... but fail to acknowledge that the human rights commissioner is already considering convening a tribunal against Paula Bennett. Funny how they think National also won the election when the entire coalition government currently in place only received 34 percent of the entire elligible vote. A government without a mandate is all we have.. with 66 percent of the population not voting for John Key or any of his coalition partners. National may not even be able to make it through full term if they lose just one minister... the Maori party wont support a bulk of their policies anyway.
