Former conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna are on the verge of reaching two major milestones.
Next week marks the second anniversary of their separation and next month the girls will turn five.
To celebrate, they have been spending time with their two mums.
The twins biological mother Lovely Goldar is visiting from Bangladesh to check on their progress.
“I am very, very happy. Babies are running, walking… I am… very, very happy,” Ms Goldar said.
It is something she never thought she’d see when she gave the two girls up for adoption two years ago.
Moira Kelly has looked after them ever since.
“We have two mums. It was lovely last year that she insisted the girls call me ‘mummy’,” Ms Kelly said.
The marathon 32-hour surgery to separate the girls in November 2009 made history.
Since then Trishna has excelled and has been offered a scholarship at one of Melbourne’s best private schools.
“It’s big steps for Trishy, over the moon we all are,” Ms Kelly said.
Krishna will always need extra help, but doctors believe she will catch up to her sister.
“A lot of us have great faith and hope in Krishna. None of us will give up on her because she never gives up on herself,” Ms Kelly said.
Seeing how happy the girls are has encouraged Ms Goldar to have another child. If it is a girl she will call it Moira.
But her trip will soon be over and leaving isn’t going to be easy.
“I am very upset [to go home].”
There are plans for an annual visit and if Krishna is up to it, the girls will travel to Bangladesh to meet their extended family next year.
