A former international rugby league star will appear in court on assault charges next week.

The 45-year-old man is alleged to have scuffled with his daughter outside a Waikato police station about 1pm yesterday.

A witness says the man jumped out of a vehicle and ran towards two women coming out of the police station, Fairfax reported.

The man grabbed the girl around the neck and the girl fell to the ground.

Hamilton Police media spokesman Andrew McAlley confirmed to NZ Newswire that a 45-year-old man had been charged with assault.

He was released on bail and is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Name and shame. Do not use the excuse of high profile and damage to reputation and career to give him name suppression. This is why they should not be using rugby players for the promotion of family and child issues and why they should not be used as role models for kids campaigns. The other important question: is he one of the many rugby players that have been picked up before for domestic violence. Should have the social agencies been involved with his family(s) long before. How old is this child and does he have other kids in his care that will need to be uplifted after this incident? Make and example of him and protect his kids.
