A Hamilton trio have been arrested after scaling a mall roof armed with an angle grinder and crowbars to break into an ATM.

A security guard noticed the group of men with t-shirts tied across their faces climb onto the Glenview Shopping Centre roof early on Wednesday and crawl towards the money machine area armed with "various tools".

Realising they had been spotted, the men jumped down into the mall and smashed their way out the entrance brandishing their crowbars at the guard, who ran to safety in his car, police shift manager Senior Sergeant Gill Meadows said.

The alarm was raised, however, and it wasn't long before the trio were caught driving 200 metres along a footpath in a stolen car driven by a woman, she said.

Two men were arrested at the scene while the other two suspects were chased by a police dog handler through several backyards before being caught.

The four, aged 22 to 33, will face Hamilton District Court on Wednesday charged with burglary, aggravated assault and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
