An elderly couple whose campervan was smashed up by about a gang of around 20 young people have had their confidence ruined , a judge said .

The couple, in their 70s, were sleeping in the van in the Warrington Domain, 32km northeast of Dunedin, earlier this year when the gang rocked and smashed the vehicle, jumped on its roof and threw bottles through its windows.

Gary Michael Davies, 20, Jamie Moses Ngaamo, 24, Marc Weir Mitchell, 24, and Darryl Johnathon Wadsworth, 18, pleaded guilty in Dunedin District Court yesterday to intentionally damaging the campervan.

The vehicle sustained $17,250 worth of damage in the "complete and sustained" attack, Judge Emma Smith said.

The elderly campers, aged 73 and 76, suffered ongoing medical difficulties and physiological ramifications, Judge Smith said.

"It was their first trip in their dream campervan. They talk of the distress of the attack, of how frenzied it was, their vulnerability and how frightened they were," she said.

Davies, who was on intensive supervision for other offences at the time of the attack, was jailed for 10 months jail.

Ngaamo and Mitchell both received nine-month sentences.

Wadsworth, who was only 17 at the time and had few previous convictions, was sentenced to home detention of five months.

The four men were ordered to pay $4312.70 each in reparations to the couple.

Wouldnt it be great if crimes like this had carried 20 lashes with a cat of nine whip, televised live on saturday mornings?, people need to suffer physical punishment for crimes, as they will wait in anxiety and fear by not knowing how painful it will be, we must scare people into not committing and re committing crimes, because no harm comes to those who commit criminal acts and prison is no detterent, some one said not so long ago that, a society is judged on how they treat thier prisoners, this is rubbish, society should be judged on how they treat victims and ensure that if crime is committed it is dealt with very harshly, do not forget that ALL crime is committed by choice, so can be avoided!!! to any liberals who want to winge, i hope you become the victims of a terrible crime, which will haunt you and your generations, its because of people like you that we are so light on crime....

Why ??

Why this senseless act ??

If this system we call Justice does not address why, then it will happen again.

I agree with Lorraine & John. Far too lenient. These guys will be grinning from ear to ear & will be out in about 3 months (2/3s). As for 'intensive supervision', I'd really like to know what that means & how things are in reality vs theory. He was obviously high-risk repeat offender, or had done something serious.
I'd like to see these & others like them get some 'intensive' jail time.

This sentencing is a real indictment of our judiciary in handing out what can only be described as lenient jail terms to these four thugs who attacked and traumatised two vulnerable senior citizens; all of them will probably be released within 4 or 5 months, while their victims will suffer for the rest of their days and as for the chances their actually making restitution. Yeah Right!

They will be lucky to see that reparation in a hurry if at all. Not harsh enough.
