Franklin District Council has lost its fight to remain independent from Auckland's Supercity plans.

It wanted to become a unitary authority, as it claims to covers a rural area that has nothing in common with the rest of the city.

But Local Government Minister Rodney Hide says the region will instead be split between Auckland, Waikato and Hauraki District Councils.

Sally Davis, chief executive of Franklin District Council, says it means a loss of identity:

The letter from Mr Hide says the reorganisation of eight councils into one will strengthen the region's governance - and result in cost savings for ratepayers.

Who the hell is Rodney Hide to decide the future of a whole district? People did not elect you to a public office to be told what to do, but you to do what they tell you too. Its amazing how kiwi's are taking the creation of this super city lying down with no public debates or discussions to weigh the pro's/con's of such a super city! How dare they take decisions without involving the people of this city or their views in public.Lets have a public referendum to decide the fate of such a creation. I am quite happy to be a resident of Manukau and would like it to be left alone as it is.

Welcome to our "democracy". Is it not occuring to other people that it is far from it? Having a vote once every thoasand days and calling it "democratic" is insulting. The salt in the wound is MMP. What a joke. This is just another in a list of instances over the last few years which should be highlighting this point.

This is a predictably stupid decision that flies in the face of public sentiment in Franklin. I would also mention the undemocratic manner in which the views of Franklin have been trampled over by this government. We will now have the absurd situation of people like myself living 4 minutes out of Pukekohe using the future super city's ammenties but paying rates to Waikato County Council. If the government couldn't leave Franklin out of the super city all together, perhaps they should have taken notice of Franklin residents second preferance of the whole district being included. At least this would have avoided the fragmentation of communitys of interest and the alienation of Pukekohe ammenties such as the sewerage treatment ponds that now fall under Wakato County Council jurisdiction.
