A freight forwarding company has been fined more than $60,000 for failing to report accidents at its workplace.
Auckland-based Mondiale Freight Services Limited, the country's largest privately owned freight forwarder was prosecuted by the former Department of Labour for failing to notify it of three incidents where workers were hurt.
The incidents, which took place in the space of a year, involved a crushed foot, a fractured thumb and a fractured rib.
The company was fined $62,475 in Manukau District Court yesterday.
The accidents only came to light when an inspector was investigating another incident at the company.
"Each of these incidents involved serious harm to a worker, and the company had a legal obligation to report them as soon as they occurred, and then follow up with formal written notification," says Claire Morris a health and safety manager with the new Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
