A French magazine has angered Maori over its latest front page featuring a rugby player with a fake facial moko.

Maori academic Rawiri Taonui says the moko is drawn badly and means nothing.

“If people want to do these sorts of things and the magazine claimed it was a tribute to Maori culture, then what they need to do is contact someone who’s got expertise in this field and do it properly”.

Inside Tetu magazine French fullback, Alexis Palisson, is pictured with more tattoos stencilled on his back and waving a spear.

While Maori remain so far up themselves noone will ever take them seriously.
[BTW, does every Maori boy wanna pay royalties to the US for 'stealing' their culture. They all speak with the accent and wear the baseball caps...]

If I were maori, I would be adopting the saying that imitation is flattery, yeah tell them to get it right but enjoy your time of fame, it will not last forever.

It would have been good if a picture of the magazine cover in question could have been included in the story so we could see what the fuss is about. Having hunted it out and had a look, it does look moderately stupid! Who is custodian of a culture if not the people of that culture? Of course Maori have a right to jump up and down over this! I get pissed off whenever I see someone throwing one arm in the air, hopping up and down, and calling it a highland fling. Don't do something half-assed and insulting and then try to pass it off as a "tribute"!

France has never been known for its care and caution in terms of indigenous sensitivities. Remember Mururoa Atoll in the seventies and eighties...?
