The baker says the concept was his wife’s idea

We all know Kiwi's enjoy a good pie. It's practically the national dish.

It should be of no great surprise that the annual pie awards draw in by far the most entries for a food competition in the country.

Out of the 4000 entries this year, there could be only one lord of the pies, and it was Shane Kearns of Kihikihi in the Waikato who took out the supreme award.

His spiced plum port and apple pie is only the second fruit filling to win the competition in the 15 years it's been held.

The baker says the concept was his wife’s idea.

Organisers estimate the title can increase a bakeries turn over by up to 500 percent in the week after the competition.
