Rob Service, on-scene commander from Maritime NZ

A press conference was held this afternoon to shed some light on what action is being taken over the grounded ship Rena, on the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of Tauranga.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce was joined by Maritime New Zealand on-scene commander Rob Service, Maritime New Zealand’s Bruce Anderson and Svitzer’s John Walker, both maritime salvage experts and Kerry Morgan from Massey University’s wildlife response team.

Salvaging is your priority. What about protecting Motiti Island? Can't that run alongside the salvaging. It's not like there's not enough space in the ocean. Motiti is going to be trashed. You have the resources. Use them.
