The Met Service is warning that parts of the North Island including Wellington will be hit by gales as a low centred over Gisborne moves southeast.

Southwesterly winds along the eastern coasts of Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Gisborne are expected to strengthen tonight with gusts of 130kmh possible in some exposed places.

Southerly gales which may exceed warning levels are also expected to affect many parts of Wellington tomorrow before the winds slowly ease during Friday.

These winds may cause damage and care should be taken when outside tomorrow, a Met Service spokesperson said.

The heavy rain that has been affecting Gisborne has now eased but a further 30mm of rain may fall in northern Hawke's Bay tonight and up to 60mm is possible in the hills or ranges of Wairarapa,

People in these areas should remain aware of river levels and watch for slips and surface flooding.
