Game, Set and Match

Thu, 25 Jun 2009 12:00a.m.

This week I went to the tennis at Wimbledon and it got me thinking about how many people it takes to create a match between 2 people- or a wedding in our case.

Generally you’d think it just requires one person on each side to keep the ball rolling but in actual fact it takes at least 13 people on the court at any one time to collect any dropped balls, and a large audience to support the players and witness the fact that the game took place.

So even though the Bride and Groom are the star players of the Wedding there is so so much more going on in the background- that’s sometimes more action packed to watch than the tennis game itself!!  ;)

I think this is part of why ‘A Wedding’ is revered so highly in history, life, family and friends.

It’s ‘everyone’s wedding’- everyone’s a part of it in some shape or form.

It is the one momentous occasion that happens in a person’s life that actively brings both families and friends together.

Everyone plays a part, has a job (or several) to do, the honour of a ‘title’ bestowed on them, an interest and a reason to feel proud of being a part of someone’s life and witnessing something profound.

For some families I know it can also be a huge cause of tension or a power play that’s generally because 1 or 2 people want a bigger slice of the ‘wedding cake’ and they don’t really understand that the cake is the Bride and Grooms and that everyone can only have the same sized slice- that’s what makes it ‘everyone’s wedding’ and maybe they need to be reminded of that as they won’t have much fun trying to play tennis alone!

But more importantly, even with all the little inevitable glitches - weddings bring everyone together, united in celebration with a collective long term game, set and match; not just once on ‘The Day’ but for the entire process leading up to the wedding.

When does that ever happen in any other aspect of your life?
