Police have arrested a 39-year-old Wairoa man wanted in connection with a gang-shooting at a rugby match last month.

Joseph Gemmell handed himself in to police on Friday, and has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm.

He will appear in the Gisborne District Court today.

The incident at Lambton Square happened late last month after a rugby match between two gang-aligned teams - Raupanga, which has Black Power connections, and Tapuwai, aligned with the Mongrel Mob.

Afterward the game, which passed without incident, several Mongrel Mob members on the back of a white ute began arguing with people leaving the carpark. One of the men on the ute fired four shots – some in the air, some towards the crowd.

Police say it was a "miracle" no one was hurt.
