Businessman Gareth Morgan has offered to pay for the funeral of Wellington homeless icon Ben Hana, better known as 'Blanket Man'.

Mr Hana died on Sunday afternoon, the cause yet unknown, after spending about a decade living on Courtenay Place in central Wellington.

He didn't leave behind any money to pay for a funeral, but despite not knowing what one costs, Mr Morgan will stump up with the cash.

'I don't know what a funeral costs, I've got no idea," he told Fairfax NZ News.

"I can't imagine it's too much. [The family] obviously haven't got the means to do it by the sounds of it... so I'll do that."

Mr Morgan lives "not too far" from where Mr Hana used to hang out, usually dressed in little more than a loincloth and blanket.

''I felt sad for him really, because I don't think he was in control… in a lot of ways.

''He's a Wellingtonian like the rest of us isn't he? We're all one community.''

An spontaneous street tribute to Mr Hana appeared on Courtenay Pl on Monday, with passers by leaving notes, flowers and even blankets.

"He was an extremely well-known Wellingtonian, who lived his life in his own way,” said mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

Years of alcohol abuse and malnutrition are possibly behind his death at the early age of 54.

before you lot have him in line for a sainthood, have a look/listen to other stuff he has said. some good some i didn't like. Yes this is a wonderful gesture. holly, its his money to donate to whomever he wishes. personally i wouldn't give to some of the ones he has chosen. and yes i think he does have morals which a lot of our elected politicians seem to lack.

Gareth Morgan for Prime Minister. A NZ elite who actually understands and feels for the common man. Mr Hana's death is yet the first of more to come in the current economic and social decline in society. More power to the 'Occupy' group. Proof that a resource based economy is what is needed to avoid total social collapse!!

Blanket man was a part of our fabric, we are all different threads of a blanket. Blanket man lived life outside of the system, I admire that and believe it to be an act of bravery. The system really does not work for many of us. May you rest in peace Blanket man and we will miss your presence. Love to you.

Omg ok this is really great of this guy, but seriously why not donate the money to cancer society there is enough children and adults diagnosed with disease everyday this could help cover their costs, i know this man that died didnt have anything but i am sure he would want the same as i do money spent on sick people would be way more beneficial hope u can all see where i am coming from :)

I feel sad for Mr Hana. His life did not look easy. It's sad that he is gone but maybe the next life will be kinder to him.

The older I get the more I admire the man you are Gareth Morgan - thank you from the bottom of my heart for this gesture. Ben was an original - whether you understood him or not - Like Bucket Man, Paddy the Wanderer et al. a true character in the fabric of Wellington City, he will be missed from our streets.
