Gas leak evacuates 12 houses

By Imogen Crispe

At least 12 houses in the Tauranga suburb of Bethlehem have been evacuated due to a gas leak.

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Colin Underwood says the fire service was alerted to the leak near Orange Lane just after 12pm and police have been assisting with the evacuation.

“It’s in a residential area so we’ve evacuated about 12 properties,” he says.

Vector has been working to locate the gas leak and has now isolated it.

Mr Underwood says a gas main has been ruptured by some workmen in the area.

He was unsure how long the evacuation would last.
