Gay marriage bill stirs heated debate

An anti-gay marriage group says allowing same-sex couples to tie the knot would open the door for polygamy and adult incest.

Heated debate over the topic began when Labour MP Louisa Wall's marriage equality bill was pulled from parliament's ballot last week.

On Sunday, Family First and other groups against the bill started an online petition on a website to "support the definition of marriage being maintained as one man one woman" and oppose any attempt to redefine this.

The site has been through some teething problems with reports that it had crashed. It was also reported the US band Train had objected to its song 'Marry Me' being used on the site.

Family First national director Bob McCoskrie has since released a statement saying if same-sex couples are allowed to marry it could be argued that those seeking polygamous, polyamorous and incestuous adult unions are also being discriminated against.

Polyamory is having more than one sexual relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved.

"If we are going to have a debate about same-sex marriage and liberalising adoption laws, it is essential that the politicians acknowledge just how far this is going to go, and what relationships will continue to be discriminated against," Mr McCoskrie said.

He is calling on political parties to state where they stand on polygamy and polyamory.

Prime Minister John Key told RadioLive he would use a conscience vote to vote in favour of the bill.

Asked whether his conscience would change in the bill's third reading, he said: "No".

He then added: "We first need to go and have the debates, I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it. I'm going to give myself a little bit of room."

Excuse me, Waka. Christian standards included slavery until the nineteenth century, and anti-Semitism until the Nazi Holocaust and World War II. And South African apartheid, underpinned by Reformed Afrikaaner churches. And what about Catholicism's concealment and denial of the extent of Catholic clergy pedophilia?

Christian standards? Let's have higher ones than that!

Schedule 2 of the Act which defines who you cannot marry is in fact straight out of the old testement, almost cut and paste. Wall is pulling your leg and treating us like morons if she expects us to fall for the "not defined " argument. What she really wants is to remove Christian standards ( on which most of our Law evolved) to substitute standards to suit a minority. Of course since Kiwi culture these days thrives on ambivilence she will no doubt succeed. Back to sleep everyone

Here are some useful links for 3 News. I decided to look up what Canada has done about same-sex marriage and the 'brown herring' of polygamy. It seems that Canada still bans recognition of polygamy...moreover, so does Section 205 of New Zealand's Crimes Act 1961

30 years ago; no one thought, believed or suspected that homosexuality one day will become legalised! Today, we can say that we do not think, believe or suspect that incest will become legalised, as it’s just as absurd. Because there are already increasing number of incest cases going to court to secure that relation(ship) so that it’s ok, then it will be case-by-case that it will be okayed by the judge. So, will human-animal relations be OK too in a few decades? Because it’s been practiced for 1000's of years. What a real shame to see how the human race developed and learned wisdom, ethics and intelligence through time and history, and then see ourselves now going backwards. Legalising homosexuality? What an imbalance this will bring to society, an abnormality and a shame. I believe that there are 3 reasons why homosexuality occur with their solutions; genetic deformities (solution: therapy), childhood traumatic experience(s) (solution: therapy) and finally spending too much time with the opposite sex at a young age (solution: teach parents about environmental influences to the psych and behaviour of the child).

But what are those boundaries? I think New Zealand has it right. We are rightly outraged at the physical, sexual and other abuse of innocent children. Consenting adults should be free to engage in relationship recognition within the context of marriage whatever their gender. It harms no-one else.

God's command is to "Love one another". So we must love each other no matter the differences. God has established boundaries for us to live in His Kingdom for His purpose and we should see it as for our protection. It is our choice how to live our lives, whether to follow Him or disobey but His boundaries for us cannot be stretched or redefined to include that which He clearly say is wrong. Our laws must ensure equal rights to all people but let not the nation go against the Word of God.

Moorhead where do you get your ideas from. Where is it said that priests etc will be forced to marry people? No one can be made to marry someone one. They will just simply say no. There is nothing that I know of that says a priest must marry a couple if they want him to? I think you are being alarmist

Luke, as I've said elsewhere in comments, Sodom and Gomorrah never existed. The historical accuracy of much of the early Old Testament is subject to fierce debate. There is no evidence of seismic activity or vulcanism around the alleged time frame of the two mythical cities.

And as for casual relationships, what about the 'mayfly' straight marriages of Britney Spears ad nauseum?
