George Clooney is frustrated his campaign to highlight the genocide in Darfur hasn't halted the ongoing killings - branding it "the greatest failure" of his life.

The Hollywood actor has long been involved with raising awareness of the conflicts in the Sudanese region of Darfur, where millions of refugees have allegedly been killed since 2003.

He was even granted a private meeting with US President Barack Obama last year to talk about the Be A Voice For Darfur scheme, which aimed to push the White House into taking action in the African region.

The Sudanese government signed a ceasefire agreement with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in February - but it hasn't stopped civilians being targeted.

And Clooney is saddened by the continued violence.

He tells Britain's The Sun, "I've been honoured to be able to lend my celebrity to help wherever I can, especially on behalf of the United Nations. But in the case of Darfur, it's been the greatest failure of my life.

"With other people, we've been able to get a lot of attention focused on the terrible situation there and nothing has changed. It's very frustrating."

I understand his frustration. It's difficult to get anything done with government - and worse still without celebrity on your side. I am thinking our leaders turn a deaf ear to anything that isn't on their original agenda... even climate change isn't making any headway. Try getting any attention to the mass rapes in Congo. My heart breaks. I would like to take arms and stop that action myself in my activist fantasy world. I don't know what to do... even in my small world of schools and local government I don't know how to make change happen fast enough. It's been something I've been exploring for a few years - with serious effort. One thing I know - showing up shouting doesn't work, as an individual. Showing up shouting en masse didn't work with the war on Afghanistan. We need the media on OUR side I think to make anything work and as it is with the watering down of FAA rules on mass ownership, the media panders to their corporate owners/bosses and hardly ever takes up an analysis or investigation to support change. Even on the local level, the paper here panders to the local govt. Its owned by a big corporation (sorry I didn't look it up as I wrote this, I should know that, and I will look it up right after posting)... ugh and ugh and ugh.... as long as we have our Budweiser and Marlboros and reality tv... "we", the masses, seem to be appeased. WE need to WAKE UP and take action. show up and speak up. I recently spoke at a City Council meeting for the first time - it was liberating. I was nervous and fearful but since then, I feel a barrier broken in my own mind. I'm part of it and I intend to stay that way. Now what can I do to stop the mass rapes in Congo? and all the other issues: Darfur, Human trafficking, Pakistan, our local Katrina afermath, etc? And how do we get the officials to prepare for the next disasters? I have ideas but I'm nothing to them.
