The man will be deported back to Germany

A 72-year-old German overstayer's 20 years on the run from immigration officials is set to end today when he is deported.

Jurgen Karl Ahrens was arrested on Thursday in the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park after a tip from a member of the public.

Ahrens was wanted by police on a charge of assault relating to an incident at Fox Glacier in 2004.

He was remanded in custody when he appeared in Christchurch District Court yesterday, the Timaru Herald reported.

Immigration officials were expected to deport him to Germany today.
