Kohin the panda

A Giant Panda born in Japan is on his way to china in the hope of meeting a mate.

Four-year-old Kohin was raised at adventure world in central Japan, but now he is off to a breeding centre.

When looking for a mate there he may have the most in common with Mei Lan. She is also an import – she was born in the United States before coming to China.

The three-year-old has spent some time adjusting to Chinese panda food, such as bamboo.

Her previous keepers at the Atlanta Zoo allowed her to get hooked on cookies.

Further to the first two comments, your headline for this story is very misleading. Neither Kohin nor Mei Lan are settling in Japan. Kohin left Japan to go to a breeding centre in China; Mei Lan left the U.S. also to go to a breeding centre in China. Mei Lan could be a possible mate for Kohin. Mei Lan had to adjust to eating the different varieties of bamboo in China, but not necessarily because she was "hooked on cookies." She was never hooked on cookies; as the other bloggers have explained, they are called "leafeater biscuits" - a nutritional supplement given to giant pandas in captivity. Again, your headline is so far from the truth, you ought to issue a correction.

Your story provides misleading information about Mei Lan's diet at Zoo Atlanta. Her diet was ~98% bamboo with the other 2% being fruit and leaf eater biscuits. Leaf eater biscuits are not cookies. Leafeater biscuits are made of soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and sugar beet pulp and contain vitamins and minerals to form a nutritious supplement for leaf-eating zoo animals, including giant pandas.

Hello! Mei Lan ate leafeater biscuits (soy based with vitamins and nutrients) as a supplement to her bamboo diet in Atlanta. All of the herbivores get them. Although we think of them as cookies (the pandas love them and they are used as rewards during their positive reinforcement training), I believe you are giving your readers the wrong impression about her diet.
