Julia Gillard has hit the campaign trail; shaking hands and kissing babies

With the Australian election just over a month away the leaders of the two major parties have hit the campaign trail.

While the first opinion polls place the Labour Party ahead of the Liberals, the parodies are painting the new Labour leader as a bit of a man eater.

Cosying up to babies and sharing cupcakes – Julia Gillard has hit the campaign trail, capitalising on support for her party in the latest polls – although she isn't taking a win for granted.

It is believed the election will be won by the leader who the Australian public trust the most and Tony Abbott had no reservations about blowing his own trumpet for his role in John Howard's government.

“The claim that Tony Abbot was a terrific health minister, that is the grab of the day,

ladies and gentlemen,” Julia Gillard said.

The polls of the day aren't as positive for the opposition.

Today's news poll gives Labour a thumping 55 to 45 lead on a two-party preferred basis and that's in line with the latest Morgan poll.

In the headline race, Ms Gillard is miles ahead of Mr Abbot as preferred prime minister, at 57 to 27; perhaps due to getting the best of their flirty exchanges in the past.

Ms Gillard, who rolled former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on June 24, was parodied for doing all the work when Rudd was her boss.

But if the latest polls are anything to go by, Ms Gillard will get the last laugh and remain boss on August 21.
