New Zealand has been at the centre of one of the biggest indictments against a file-sharing website, with the arrest of Megaupload founder Kim Schmitz in Auckland.

Previous to the indictment Megaupload had been involved in a dispute with Universal Music involving a promotional video posted on YouTube by the filesharing website.

The video features stares including Kanye West, will.i.am and P Diddy endorsing Megaupload in a catchy song.

Megaupload’s CEO is Swizz Beatz a hip-hop star who is married to Alicia Keys.

Universal requested the video be removed from YouTube who initially complied, Megaupload filed a lawsuit and as it stands the video is still available on the site.

In a story on Hollywood Reporter’s website it is reported that Universal had the video removed because it contained an unauthorised performance by New Zealand singer Gin Wigmore.

However, Megaupload deny this – saying they had approached the singer but instead opted to go with RnB star Macy Gray.

3 News has watched the Megaupload song and can confirm Wigmore does not appear on the song.

I would take my hat off to Wigmore if she did appear in the video. Its gutsy stuff to go up against the rich and powerful - these totalitarians of the new era.

I wrote about this on my blog in december last year - Gin Wgigmore agreed to be on the song, recorded her vocals at Neil Finn's Roundhead studio, then her manager and label refused permission, according to Dotcom. The video went on to have over two million views. http://dubdotdash.blogspot.com/2011/12/mega-what.html

Yep, he's been at it since 1995 with a computer company providing data security services. And then here he is today, heaps of stuff on him, because he likes to be known.

I think someone on your news staff needs to do some catching up by reading the last couple of years of material on sites such as TorrentFreak and others - these stories seem to have taken you by surprise. Duh! Could we re-visit the money rec'd by our government from the USA to introduce (under urgency) the anti-file sharing legislation which was allegedly part of a larger deal to ensure we got The Hobbit filmed here. What else was agreed.
