The parents of a five-year-old European girl who was allegedly raped at a Turangi camping ground have asked the court to consider the long-term impact on their daughter.
A 16-year-old Turangi boy charged with rape, burglary and causing grievous bodily harm by sexual violation, appeared in Taupo Youth Court on Thursday.
In court his mother read a prayer written by the teenager asking God for forgiveness of his sins and to relieve him of anger and stress.
The teenager has indicated he will plead guilty.
The girl's parents were concerned after the judge praised the teenager's tidy appearance, The New Zealand Herald reported.
"We felt the judge's comments about the offender's smart looking [appearance] was out of place. We were concerned when we read them," they reportedly said.
They asked the court in a statement to "consider the impact this has had and will continue to have for years on our daughter and our family".
"We find it difficult to believe that this boy who did this to our daughter three weeks ago can write beautiful prayers to God now.
"Our daughter was fast asleep when this boy violated her and stole something from her that can never be returned."
The family, who are still in New Zealand, said they will not be at the youth's next court appearance on Wednesday because they will be with their daughter at Waikato Hospital.
They thanked New Zealanders who sent them prayers and messages.
A trust fund set up for the girl has raised $NZ61,000.
The girl was attacked in a caravan at Club Habitat Holiday Park in Turangi on December 21, suffering significant injuries to her head and body.
