The teenager has indicated he will plead guilty

Sun, 15 Jan 2012 9:39a.m.

The parents of a five-year-old European girl who was allegedly raped at a Turangi camping ground have asked the court to consider the long-term impact on their daughter.

A 16-year-old Turangi boy charged with rape, burglary and causing grievous bodily harm by sexual violation, appeared in Taupo Youth Court on Thursday.

In court his mother read a prayer written by the teenager asking God for forgiveness of his sins and to relieve him of anger and stress.

The teenager has indicated he will plead guilty.

The girl's parents were concerned after the judge praised the teenager's tidy appearance, The New Zealand Herald reported.

"We felt the judge's comments about the offender's smart looking [appearance] was out of place. We were concerned when we read them," they reportedly said.

They asked the court in a statement to "consider the impact this has had and will continue to have for years on our daughter and our family".

"We find it difficult to believe that this boy who did this to our daughter three weeks ago can write beautiful prayers to God now.

"Our daughter was fast asleep when this boy violated her and stole something from her that can never be returned."

The family, who are still in New Zealand, said they will not be at the youth's next court appearance on Wednesday because they will be with their daughter at Waikato Hospital.

They thanked New Zealanders who sent them prayers and messages.

A trust fund set up for the girl has raised $NZ61,000.

The girl was attacked in a caravan at Club Habitat Holiday Park in Turangi on December 21, suffering significant injuries to her head and body.

I find this story stressful .. How could a 16 year old rape and hurt a 5year old .. If he knows the difference between right and wrong then i think he should be charged and jailed for life that is what this has cost her .. Makes u sick to think that there are people out there that would do this to a poor defence less child . And as for the judge she should be disbarred what right does she have to stay that he looks smart ... If he was smart he would be in trouble and wouldn't have raped a baby . Y are we the only nations that put up with people like this .. You get can go to jail in at lot of countries for spitting in the ground for longer then what u do here for rape . Australian and new Zealand laws need to be changed the punishment needs to fit the crime .. You go to jail overseas for staying longer then what ur visa does and in Australia if u come into the country u get free accodation food and centerline pay u so y not instead of sending them to jail where they all belong .. Sorry got a bit of topic there just overnthe way our justice system runs . It's stupid the way it works ,.. He needs to rot in jail for what he has done to this little girl and her family .scumbag is a nice word to call him I have plenty of other things I would like to call him ... And I am sure the father would like to be left alone with him for 10 minutes as would I ...

It is not normal human behaviour to rape a 5 year old girl. The offender is a paedophile, and since once established someone's sexual preference doesn't normally change, he will remain a danger to young children for the remainder of his life. Accordingly I don't see why this is being treated as a criminal case at all. There should be a proper psychiatric assessment of course, but this guy belongs in a high security mental institution. Permanently.

Where were the boys parents when this was taking place. parents should know where and what their children are doing every hour of the day. especially teenage children. the parents should be punished as well.

I would like to read a full transcript of this hearing. Why is the judge passing complements to the accused? A comment stressing the gravity of the crime and charges, as well as the impact upon the victim and her family would have been far more appropriate. As for the letter that was read out - the accused wants God to help make him a man. It looks like this whole thing has been a very misguided mission to make himself a man. Considering the child was sexually violated and had he teeth punched out - a pray for the victim would have been much more fitting. The focus is completely wrong here, I hope this case is moved to the adult court, as the crime is of an adult nature.

He won't serve longer then a year. I really feel for all the tourists bashed and killed in this country especially for those whose families live in countries where the sentence meets the crime. They must feel awful when their child's murder gets 10 years.

Scumbags usually turn up to court wearing clothes they have probably never worn in their lives in order to look respectable. Judges are wise to this, though this judge appears to have come down in the last shower..

I agree with FW. This offender should be sent to prison until the family agrees upon his release. I also agree with the victim's family in respect to his prayers to god. God has nothing to do with his crimes (and his appearance in court) and the judge should base the sentence on FACTS not emotion. It's sad a 16 year old can commit such horrific acts, however it is even sadder that anyone can give him an ounce of pity!

I cannot believe judge Jocelyn Munro. It is discusting to refer to a 16 year old rapist as having a tidy appearance, "very smart". This just shows how soft New Zealand judges are, this kid should be serving a life sentence in prison.
