A pilot has been killed after a glider crashed 17km northwest of Omarama in Otago.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman James Sygrove said the crash was reported about 6.20pm on Wednesday.

A helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft with glider-towing capability were deployed to search for the glider.

Mr Sygrove said the helicopter was able to land close to the crash site.

A doctor on board confirmed the glider's pilot had died.

Mr Sygrove said the matter will be handed over to police.
