The Electricity Commission has given the go-ahead for Transpower's controversial plans to build giant pylons from Waikato to Auckland.
The $683-million proposal still requires resource consent, and has faced a backlash over concerns about environmental and economic issues.
There is no word on speculation the Environment Minister will "call in" the project, putting the consent process on the fast track.
The state-owned grid operator already had a conditional nod for the project linking Whakamaru near Tokoroa, to Pakuranga in Auckland.
