Labour leader Phil Goff has heaped rare praise on the Prime Minister.

Mr Goff was responding to questions about his party's performance in the polls – but it all ended very strangely.

“I've got to give it to John Key – he's a very good politician; very slick, very professional at what he does, very good at photo opportunities and that helps him,” he said.

However, Mr Goff wasn't doing himself any favours – 3 News asked what he meant – he kept digging.

“I'm happy to give credit where credit’s due,” Mr Goff said. “He's a good politician at getting a media opportunity and at political spin – they poll every week and then say in their statements what they think the public want to hear.”

Hearing their leader talking up the Prime Minister is probably not what his Labour MPs wanted to hear.

Mr Goff though was on a roll – all of which left the prime minister bemused.

“Well there's obviously been a change of heart in the Labour Party,” Mr Key said.

Mr Goff ended the day spectacularly off message – even his own team were left wondering what happened, but politics is war and today Mr Goff blinked first.

Perhaps he should have ended his statement with a Rick Gilesian "Not!" so that Rebecca Wright could pick up on it. It's pretty transparent, I'm surprised she was so thick.

Christopher and Mark Christopher - your posts made me laugh. If you're going to pretend to be two slightly different morons, you should at least TRY and make your moronic posts slightly different. Difficult for some I suppose.

Hopefully 'Philin' will stay leader then national will easily get back in. 'Philin' was dumb to say those comments - the number one 'no no' rule is to praise the current leader. What is he on ? is it 5 % popularity ? you can see why - John Key is light years ahead in popularity and this is unheard of in N.Z. history. The Labour back benchers will be seething and they will have difficulty hiding their contempt with his comments. The knives are out - but there is none to replace him -they are all corrupt old school communists. Just remember people why Helen got dumped - the average Kiwi got sick of her corrupt ways. She and Michael should be charged for the social and financial damage they did to N.Z. John Key is a breath of fresh air.

I really hope 'Philin' stays leader. National will win the election easily - thank goodness. John leaves Philin for dead sorry all you dumb lefties / socialist. Phil is absolutely hopeless - he has committed the number one blunder in politics by praising the current leader. The thing is he was correct with his commnents. The labour backbench is seething ! but Labour are dead in the water.
Just remember why Communist Helen and the rest of of socialist crooks got dumped at the last election - Kiwis had had enough of her - Helen and Micheal should have been arrested for the way they destroyed N.Z. John Key is a a breath of fresh air.

@John - You're seriously trying to imply that John Key, (a man who has come up with "textes" "Afghanistanians" "lewid" and "scuttlebug,") is a superior speaker to Phil Goff? Really?? Maybe you should actually listen to Key once in a while, his manner of slurred speaking is on par with that of George W. Bush.

Did he really say "I've got to given it to John Key..."? Guy can't even speak properly, no wonder he's on 8%.

Praise? He was basically calling John Key a flip flopping media whore. In case Rebecca Wright needs clarification - that's hardly a compliment.
