A top New Zealand businessman who’s one of Labour’s backroom boys has bluntly called on party leader Phil Goff to resign.

Selwyn Pellett says Mr Goff can’t win the election and in his words should be “put to bed” to avoid a devastating loss come November.

Mr Pellett is a businessman, a deep economic thinker with strong links to Labour. He has helped Labour write its economic policy, has attended party conferences and run policy workshops.

Labour MPs promote his thinking on their own website.

But today the relationship hit the rocks as Mr Pellett called on Mr Goff to resign.

In a blog, Mr Pellett writes:

"Labour is likely to lose the election no matter who is leading it, but with Phil Goff at the helm it could be a devastating result. People have simply stopped listening.

"It's sad as Phil is a very nice and sincere man but now it's time for him to go."

3 News spoke to Mr Pellett, who is currently in America. He wouldn’t be interviewed but said: “Labour is now completely dysfunctional. It has to put Phil to bed.”

Mr Goff said he had “no reaction” to the comments.

“It’s the expression of one individual who is entitled to his opinion.”

Mr Pellett says a strong opposition is essential and Mr Goff can’t deliver that.

3 News asked long-time Labour MP George Hawkins if Mr Goff can win this year’s election. He answered simply, “We’ll see on election day.”

The proper answer to that question if you’re a Labour MP is yes, of course he can win. But not many in Labour even privately agree with that anymore.

Ask them publicly, and it puts them in an even more uncomfortable position.

A number of Mr Goff’s front-bench MPs told 3 News today Mr Goff will not stand down, and accepted Mr Pellett’s comments are most unhelpful.

Kim, finally we agree on something. You are quite right that it will be National that fixes the issues we have at hand - Japan's economy in a nose dive, US economy still stagnant and two major earthquakes knocking out NZ's second largest city. Big issues and thankfully it will be National that fixes them - certainly Phlip Phlop Goff and his mates in the Labour Party have had nothing to add to the debate other than whining and offering to spend more money if they get a hold of the Government coffers.

Oh yes, do you really expect a sitting Labour MP to publicly bag Goff? You are even more naive than I thought!

Labour will lose heavily and Phil will go, but he is the best by a long way of a pretty average bunch....

@Brad If Goff has such a poor chance and is disliked so much surely people like yourself should be happy for him to stay. This whole thing is a media attempt to destabilise the Labour party in the leadup to the election because there were signs of them gaining support. How many importand investigative stories have been ignored so that the reporters can go running around chasing this non story. I mean ffs they had to go as far as the US to get this statement. Oh and your comment: He comes across as a snively, whiny hypocrite without a single idea on how NATIONAL will fix the issues other than spend even MORE money we dont have.(ok i changed one word to give context..Never said it was a quote) sounds more like English to me.. But hey its about perception isn't it. Show me one statement from a sitting MP that says they want Goff gone. All i see are reporters adding there own answers to unanswered questions. And running from pillar to post desperate to find people to support thier views.

Kim, you miss the issue. The problem is that no one in the Labour Party clearly has any faith in Phlip Phlop Goff. So if the party doesnt have faith, why should the NZ public? So if this is the case you have to start worrying about Goff's judgement - why is he hanging on? There is the issue. Pellett is quite right - no one is listening to him anymore. He comes across as a snively, whiny hypocrite without a single idea on how Labour will fix the issues other than spend even MORE money we dont have.

Pellett is saying nothing that hasn't already been said numerous times before. Goff won't get rolled until after the lection. Nobody in Labour wants to become leader of a party in election year when there is no chance of winning. The leadership change will take place after November and in the part of the political cycle when the National Government starts to lose support.

How about you ask if they think anyone that is elegible to lead the party into the next election can win it? It's probly time to move on to real news now duncan. Seems to me that all the political reporters of TV3 are doing these days is running around asking anyone with any sort of profile if goff can win. Truth is he has as good a chance as anyone in Labour at the moment (and you know as well as i do that a leadership change now just for the sake of it would be more damageing than keeping Goff)so how about you get back to reporting on the state of the economy and nationals fantastic plan to fix it. If you wrote with as much passion on the subject of secret SIS debates or maybe the biggest defeict EVER than this beaten to death story you might regain some of the respect i among others used to have for you.
