John Key on Letterman's show

Labour leader Phil Goff launched a stinging attack on Prime Minister John Key this morning, releasing his own 'Top 10 things you won't hear on Letterman'.

Addressing delegates from the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, Mr Goff says Mr Key needs to stand by his record and stop making excuses.

Here is Mr Goff's list.

1. Unemployment up by 50 percent even before the quakes
2. 100,000 New Zealanders have left for Australia after he promised he would stop the brain drain;
3. Prices have gone up nearly four times faster than incomes over the past 3 years. John Key increased prices by hiking GST after promising not to;
4. The first credit rating downgrade in 13 years and a double downgrade at that;
5. There are 60,000 more people on benefits costing an extra $1 billion a year;
6. The wage gap with Australia has increased by $32 a week;
7. There are 55,200 15 to 24 year olds not in education, employment or training and the number of young people on the unemployment benefit long term has increased by over 700 percent;
8. The economy has grown by just 0.4 per cent since John Key took office;
9. National's tax cuts for the most well off were supposed to be paid for with the GST. They actually cost an extra $1.1 billion in their first nine months;
10. The underclass has grown with the number of children living in benefit dependent households increasing by over 32,000 in the past 3 years.

Mr Key appeared on David Letterman's Late Show in May 2009 - watch the clip here.

"Every Prime Minister has to stand on their record and John Key is no different," says Mr Goff. "He can't keep promising things will be better soon.

"This is not a personal attack or slight. The simple fact is things have got worse since he has been Prime Minister."

Mr Goff also says the Government's "mixed ownership model" really means "asset sales".

"It is a dumb idea to sell the assets we already own. New Zealanders know that, and they don't want it."

National voters are arrogant!

I’ve had a discussion today with some national voters... they don't fully understand monetary policy!! *surprise, surprise *

they lack the understanding by which money and debt are created in our economy.

This country is heading towards greece!

Don't be afraid of change: Vote Green!

@katrina; Sorry mate, even with lowering the minimum wage, we still cannot compete with overseas sweatshops that pay their workers the equivalent of $.20-$2 per hour! One cannot compare the minimum acceptable living costs in NZ, with that acceptable in Mumbai, Delhi or Bangkok. It is proven that those who profit the most from a National gvt, will most certainly spend their extra income on luxury trips overseas, more property ( by borrowing more from foreign banks ) and more luxury goods, while the most vulnerable part of the society will suffer even more. Use your brain, lady! and vote with your intelligence, not based on election crap the Nats feed you. Managing this economy, and the country, needs vision, commitment to all people and ability to regulate and manage the system in a way that is fair. Nats have nothing to offer NZ.

What is not being told by media is that key stated before the election process kicked off that "There will be much,much deeper cuts that will affect everyone if they win" this hasn't surfaced in the media though, i wonder why.

It's d a truth - did you stop to think that the unemployment went up as a result of cost of manufacturing increased due to minimum wage increased which lead to a lot of major employers ie. F&P shifting manufacturing off shore which lead to redundancies? That started happening under Labour. Labour started pushing the wheel that got the cart rolling down the hill. Don't forget that National took over the drivers seat at the start of the recession which Labour contributed to.

I neither support national or labour but i would vote for labour over national. for the simple fact people know in a democracy if you want your vote to count you have to vote for who you know is popular because that's what the polls tell you. who to vote for. not only is that underlying factor completely ignored by the general public or discouraged the fassad we live under of freedom freedom that extends as far as your purchasing power. no matter how free you think you are you can't jump in a plane and go over seas whenever you feel. no matter how free you think you are you live close to the job you hate. paying the rent, paying the power, paying for gas, paying for water. so you keep doing that job to pay all those things things that in a real economy wouldn't cost a cent. locked into the system, while your money is drained by vampires like national, everyone locked in that system has money siphoned from them. getting bigger and bigger the more people it goes through untill eventually all the siphoned money from your slavery reaches big pay checks, some of it gets away into charities some on road works but this serves only enough to keep people happy. meanwhile people in there stupor are buying and slaving away thinking that john key will suddenly change from a money hungry vampire into the savior for this country how bad do things have to get before we the people of new zealand who hate their job who hate to see homeless on the streets or crime or injustice wake up people we are not going to be slaves any longer, slaves for the government for corporations benefiting from having all the resources and money to controll things. to pay of governments to pay for political campaigns the ones who think they control the world. no they don't we are many and we are stronger. The venus project is the only answer. lets finally advance to the future.

@ Eric - The first line of the list says 'Unemployment up by 50 percent even BEFORE the quakes'. At least read the article before you rant. You made a total goof of yourself. And your comments are absolute rubbish. 19 billion dollars debt. Wiggle you way out of that one. 60,000 more beneficiaries under National. Each of those points is a fact. Something you don't seem familiar with, like reading.
