One of the new teams in Australia's A-League handed first-place Sydney its first loss of the season on Saturday - and moved into top spot in the process.
New Zealand international Shane Smeltz scored twice - in first-half stoppage time and early in the second half - to give Gold Coast United side a 2-1 home win. The win left them in first place with 12 points, two ahead of Sydney.
Gold Coast has four wins in its first five matches, while Sydney suffered its first defeat after three wins and a draw.
It was Smeltz's eighth goal of the season. Smeltz, who won the Golden Boot last season, now has more goals himself this season than the number scored by any other A-League team.
"When Shane is one-on-one with the goalkeeper like he was for the second goal, you can light your cigar," Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg said.
Substitute Steve Corica scored Sydney's goal in the 75th minute.
The other first-year A-League team, North Queensland Fury, drew 1-1 with Queensland state rival Brisbane Roar. The Fury are the only team without a win this season and are in last place with two draws and three losses to open the season.
Former Liverpool star and Fury captain Robbie Fowler gave his team a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, but Serginho van Dijk equalized with five minutes left for Brisbane.
On Friday, Central Coast's Matt Simon scored with one minute left when Perth goalkeeper Tando Velaphi's mistake handed the Mariners a 2-1 win.
Velaphi charged off his line in an attempt to intercept the shot, but the ball bounced over his head and Mariners substitute Dylan Macallister crossed the ball to Simon for an easy tap-in.
Earlier, Central Coast skipper Alex Wilkinson scored his first A-League goal to give his side the lead in the 41st minute before Perth striker Mile Sterjovski leveled the match with eight minutes left as he slotted home the rebound after his penalty was saved.
"We've deserved a wee bit of luck over the last few weeks, and we certainly got that at the end," Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna said.
Perth coach Dave Mitchell refused to blame Velaphi.
"He's come in and apologized to all the players but Tando's ... a great goalkeeper," Mitchell said. "He'll learn from it, as we all will."
The Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United drew 1-1, with Paul Ifill giving the home side the lead in the 35th minute, and Iain Fyfe equalizing for Adelaide five minutes later.
Wellington is unbeaten at home in eight matches dating back to last season - five wins and three draws.
Newcastle substitute Labinot Haliti scored with three minutes left to give the Jets a 1-1 draw with the defending champions Melbourne Victory. Haliti headed home a Tarek Elrich cross after Melbourne took the lead in the 42nd minute as Archie Thompson headed home a Leigh Broxham free kick.
