Buffy and Bimbo with John Key

It's said that behind every great man is a woman, but in New Zealand it seems behind every great man are two men wearing dresses.

It was the first time our new Prime Minister goofed around in public, dancing with drag queens at the Big Gay Out. Now John Key's dance partners, Buffy and Bimbo, have spilt the beans on that day and their role in his success.

Nightline's Ali Ikram got the inside story on the first of the prime minister's golden moments of 2009.

Let's be fair, though, Dudley- he also voted against Gordon Copeland's attempt to pre-emptively ban same sex marriage and his government has just abolished the provocation defence. Added to which, I applaud his rejection of binding referenda.

Against that, though, there's also the matter of Rankin and Pilborow's Families Commission appointments and delays in modernising the Adoption Act 1955 so we can have full substantive LGBT equality in this country.

It's not just about dance moves, Mr Key.

It irks that Key tries to schmooze with gays and get our vote, yet when it came to the crunch, he voted against the Civil Unions Bill.
