Kiwi songstress Kirsten Morrell from Goldenhorse is going out on her own.
She is releasing a new single next week called ‘Cherry Coloured Dreams’, ahead of her debut solo album Ultraviolet, which is due out early next year.
It is a new single and a new look for one of New Zealand's most well known redheads, but her fans will be glad she only went brunette for the video.
Morrell says the temporary hair change was all part of an experiment.
“It is red, it's dark red, well maybe I was experimenting and seeing if redheads have more fun, I don't know,”
Either way, much has changed for Morrell since Goldenhorse's third album Reporter came out two years ago.
She is coy, to say the least, about the band she formed with Geoffrey Maddock in 1999.
“It just means we're in hiatus really, Geoffrey Maddock recorded on this solo album as well I got the chance to work with the best musicians and producers in New Zealand,” she says.
Both Maddock and Morrell are still officially part of Goldenhorse.
She says fans should still keep an eye on the bands future movements.
Today, however, the priority was getting a dress for a gig to raise money for the Starship Children’s Hospital.
Morrell is also finding time to promote her new single, which she says is a step forward but also a nod to the past.
“Much the same but as you develop I suppose you become spectrally different, so yeah ‘Cherry Coloured Dreams’ is a little ode to the Cocteau Twins who I’ve always loved,” she says.
The single is out next Monday and the album Ultraviolet' is out in February, as for the next Goldenhorse album, who knows?
